AI tools read this list to find your most useful pages. Keep the pages people ask about most; untick the rest.
"Optional" is a special section: AI tools may skip it when they need a shorter overview. It is always the last section.
Your llms.txt
Where to put it
- If you use Yoast SEO or Rank Math, check their llms.txt setting first: they can create the file for you, and two files would clash.
- Otherwise, download the file and upload it as llms.txt to the main folder (root) of your site with your hosting file manager, so it opens at yourwebsite.com/llms.txt.
- Open yourwebsite.com/llms.txt to check it is live.
- Shopify does not let you upload your own files to the root of your shop, so you cannot add llms.txt there yourself.
- Some apps in the Shopify App Store can publish an llms.txt for you. If you use one, check that it lets you paste your own text, then paste the file above.
- Open yourwebsite.com/llms.txt to check it is live.
- Wix does not let you upload your own files to the root of your site.
- Look in your SEO settings for an llms.txt option. If there is none, your site cannot host the file yet, and you can keep it ready for when it can.
- Squarespace does not let you upload your own files to the root of your site.
- Look in your SEO settings for an llms.txt option. If there is none, your site cannot host the file yet, and you can keep it ready for when it can.
- Look in Site settings → SEO for an llms.txt option and paste the file above there, then publish your site.
- If there is no such option on your plan, Webflow cannot host the file at the root of your site yet.
- Open yourwebsite.com/llms.txt to check it is live.

About the generator
What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a short text file at the root of your website, for example yourwebsite.com/llms.txt. It introduces your business in a sentence or two and lists your most useful pages, grouped into sections, so an AI tool can understand your site without reading every page.
It is a new, optional standard. Some AI tools and developer platforms already read it, but it is not yet confirmed that every major AI system does. It is quick to add and does no harm, which is why we recommend it as a small extra step after the basics: allowing AI crawlers, readable content and clear structure.
How the generator works
- Read your site: we read your homepage, your sitemap and any llms.txt you already have.
- Describe your business: check your site name and a one-line summary, and add a few details if you like.
- Choose your key pages: keep the pages people ask about most, rename them, add short notes and move less important pages to the Optional section.
- Copy or download the file and upload it to the root of your website.
Frequently asked questions
Is the llms.txt generator free?
Yes. It is free and needs no account or email address.
Do ChatGPT, Claude and Google use llms.txt?
llms.txt is a proposed standard, and support varies. Some AI tools and coding assistants read it, while the major AI search systems have not confirmed that they use it for ranking or citations. It helps AI tools find your key pages, but it does not replace the basics: letting AI crawlers in, clear content and good structure.
Where do I put the llms.txt file?
At the root of your website, so it opens at yourwebsite.com/llms.txt. The generator explains how to do this on WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace and Webflow.
I use Yoast SEO or Rank Math. Do I need this?
Both plugins can create an llms.txt for you. If you use that feature, you do not need a second file. The generator is useful if you want to choose the pages and write the descriptions yourself; in that case, turn the plugin’s llms.txt feature off so the two files do not clash.
Which pages should I include?
The pages that answer the questions your customers ask most: your services or products, pricing, about and contact pages, and your most useful guides. Leave out thin or duplicate pages. Put helpful but less important pages, such as your blog, in the Optional section.
Do you store my website or the file?
We keep what we read from your site for 24 hours, so it loads quickly if you come back. The file you build is created in your browser and is not stored.
